City plans purchase of historic property

The city of Columbia is planning to purchase a run down but historically significant property on Switzler Street near downtown that is considered an important part of local African American heritage. The property was the homestead of Henry Kirklin, a famous African American horticulturist in the early 20th century. It’s been a rental property for several years and the city has made a deal to buy it for $91,000. Approval from the city council is still needed. A citizens group would like to see the gardens restored to pay tribute to Kirklin’s groundbreaking accomplishments at the location.
