Columbia school board pushes back elementary in-person learning date

The Columbia school board voted Monday night to change the planned return to in-person learning for elementary students from Jan. 11 to Jan. 19. That lines it up with the scheduled return for middle-and-high schoolers.

The board wants to see how coronavirus numbers in the district look at its next scheduled meeting on Jan. 11 before putting kids back in classrooms. But multiple board members said they want to get students safely back in-person as soon as possible.

“I hope we use that additional to talk with teachers and employees about what could be some of the things that they feel would support a return to in-seat,” CPS board member Susan Blackburn said.

CPS has been doing almost all remote learning since March because of coronavirus concerns. The district will remain virtual when students return from the holiday break on Jan. 5.
