Columbia’s city council will hear a presentation Monday afternoon at their pre-council meeting about different cost scenarios to rebuild the city’s material recovery facility (MRF) at the landfill.
Easter Sunday’s EF-1 tornado destroyed that facility, and damage to the city landfill was catastrophic. The city says there are three options: building a new MRF on the existing structure, building a new one on the current landfill operations center site and building a new MRF on an open gravel lot west of the administration building. The costs for the three scenarios range from $21-million to $26-million. The council will not be voting on the issue tonight.
Columbia Utilities director Erin Keys will be sworn-in at tonight’s regular meeting at 7. She began her new position in May. Ms. Keys has served as interim director of Columbia Utilities since March 2025 and has worked for the department since 1994.
