A deadly collision between a motorcycle and a vehicle near Columbia’s West Nifong and Bethel killed a Rock Bridge high school student Monday afternoon. The victim’s name has not been released and likely won’t be, because he is a juvenile.

Columbia Public Schools (CPS) spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark describes the crash as tragic and unexpected news for CPS and Bruin families, adding that “words cannot express how difficult it is to lose one of our students.”

Ms. Baumstark tells 939 the Eagle that additional counselors are available at Rock Bridge for any students and staff who needs them. She extends the district’s heartfelt sympathy to the student’s family.

939 the Eagle’s Andy Humphrey reports there was a moment of silence to honor the victim before last night’s district championship boys basketball game between Rock Bridge and Battle. The game was at Hickman.

The Columbia Police Department’s traffic unit is investigating the crash. The CPD’s traffic unit determined the motorcycle was traveling west of West Nifong and the Toyota was in the process in the process of making a left turn into a private drive. Investigators say the Toyota was struck on the passenger side by the juvenile on the motorcycle, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
