AG backs judge’s ruling on Erickson petition

Charles Erickson does not have an ally at the state attorney general’s office.

A judge this week rejected Erickson’s challenge of his imprisonment. Erickson admitted to his role in the death of Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt in 2001. But the other person found guilty in the killing, Ryan Ferguson, had his conviction vacated a few years ago.

Attorney General Eric Schmitt said Wednesday that Erickson admitted to what he did, took too long to challenge his guilty plea, and needs to serve out the rest of his 25-year sentence.

“Violently taking someone’s life is a heinous act against another human being. He was found guilty and now should be held responsible to the fullest extent of the law,” Schmitt said in a written statement.
