A gun scare at an elementary school ends up harmless.
Columbia police swarmed Russell Boulevard Elementary School Friday afternoon after a school employee reported hearing what they thought were gunshots.
According to the school’s principal, the employee then called 911 and officials put the school on a modified lockdown. The noise turned out to be two children were playing with airsoft BB guns in a park nearby.
The school’s lockdown was then lifted. The school’s principal says school was out for the day when the incident occurred, but some students were at the school for an after-school program.
The students were brought inside as soon as the employee came into the building and reported hearing gunshots.
Columbia police say the two children with the BB guns were shooting at the ground. They were taken into custody and released to their parents.
