Allegiant announced in November that they’ll begin nonstop service from COU to Orlando Sanford and to the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport this summer and that service is starting Wednesday.

Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) director Michelle Hataway joins Columbia Mayor Pro Tem Nick Foster, Boone County Presiding Commissioner Kip Kendrick, Allegiant executives and others for a 2 pm ceremony.

Columbia Regional Economic Development Incorporated (REDI) president Paul Eisenstein has told 939 the Eagle that the new flights are big for the business community here, noting there’s a lot of convention traffic that goes to Orlando.

What it means: Allegiant Airlines’ new service at Columbia Regional Airport (COU) is big for two main reasons. It offers nonstop service to two popular Florida vacation markets: Orlando and Destin/Fort Walton Beach. It’s also big for Columbia’s business community, especially because of all the conventions in Orlando.
