AP source: Officials may target those who overstay visas

(AP) – Trump administration officials are discussing several ideas for dealing with the immigration issue as President Donald Trump seeks to make good on his 2016 campaign promises and energize his base going into the next election.

Two people familiar with one proposal tell The Associated Press that the administration is considering placing new travel restrictions on people from countries with high numbers of citizens who overstay short-term visas.

The nonpartisan Center for Migration Studies says the number of people who overstay their visas exceeds the number of illegal border crossings.

The administration has also been weighing targeting the remittance payments sent home by people living in the country illegally. And there is a proposal to punish immigrants in the country legally for using public benefits, such as food stamps.
