(AUDIO) Ashland Police Chief talks crossing guard duties, nationwide contest

Lyn Woolford wears a lot of hats in the city of Ashland.

He’s the police chief, the city administrator and serves as crossing guard to help get kids to school safely.

He told Wake Up Columbia this week that he takes particular pride in the last job, literally wearing a different silly hat on certain days of the school year.

“It definitely was a way to introduce myself to this community and the kids, and to let people know that I’m approachable and that police are not the bad guys,” said Woolford.

Woolford is now a finalist in the “Safe Kids Worldwide” nationwide search for America’s Favorite Crossing Guard earning the most votes with more than 11,000.

Now, a committee of sponsors reviews the finalists and decides the winner that will be announced on Dec. 17th.
