Would law enforcement work better in Boone County if the sheriff’s department did more stuff with the Columbia Police Department? Presiding Commissioner Dan Atwill floated the idea this week.
“I know the sheriff needs more money. Everybody needs more money. And we’ve gotta figure out ways to consolidate services in the county if possible to accomplish the things that we’re expected to accomplish in the public sector.”
Atwill says it may not be a merger of the departments, just joining some services. He points to 911 dispatch as one example where the county and city work together.
