Cole County Prosecuting Attorney Locke Thompson knows those teams will go after older folks who they see as easy marks.
“If you have elderly neighbors [or] family who suffered some damage who you think might be subjected to this, definitely check in on them. Make sure they aren’t entering sort of verbal agreement on the spot.”
Thompson saw the handyman scammers come through Joplin when he worked for the Jasper County prosecutor in the days after the 2011 tornado.
He adds be especially wary of contractors who want their money up front.
