Blunt will not seek re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2022

Roy Blunt announced Monday morning that he will not seek reelection to the U.S. Senate in 2022.

The Missouri Republican was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, after serving seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was reelected to the Senate in 2016. He has spent nearly 50 years in public office.

More from The Associated Press:

Republican U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri says he will not seek reelection. He made the surprise announcement in a video Monday, making him the fifth Republican in the Senate to bow out rather than seek another term in a party searching for direction after President Donald Trump. Blunt, who turned 71 in January, was widely expected to seek a third term in 2022. Before election to the Senate he served seven terms in the U.S. House. He also served two terms as Missouri’s secretary of state from 1985 to 1993. Blunt said at a news conference he was confident he would have won if he ran.

  1. He should go. Did more to help Biden then Trump

  2. Him and about 5 other republican senators who are not running 2022 can see the writing on the wall that their once GRAND OLD PARTY is falling apart. One must be Trumpy enough to win in this state now……Machine Gun Greitens fits that profile. Another used car salesman.
