Boone County official stresses fireworks safety

Boone County authorities say they hope a wetter spring will cut down on fire risks this Fourth of July.

Gale Blomenkamp with the fire protection district says it’s fine if you choose to shoot your own fireworks on Thursday night, but be smart about it.

“When they say do not hold the fireworks in your hand, that’s what that means,” Blomenkamp says. “If you follow those directions, people can shoot the consumer-grade fireworks off safely and have a good time doing it.”

Blomenkamp recommends having someone sober shoot the fireworks. He says to have some water nearby in case a fire does spark. If a firework does not go off, he says to leave it alone for 15-20 minutes.
