Boone County Sheriff’s Department warns of phone scam

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department has received information that someone is impersonating a detective over the phone in order to get people to pay money to cancel an outstanding arrest warrant.

The scammer is apparently saying they are Detective Sullivan or Detective O’Sullivan, and told one person they had to pay $1,700 to cancel an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for jury duty. The caller ID also has been manipulated, making it seem like the call is originating from the sheriff’s department.

The department said it will never call citizens to ask them to provide credit card information or money cards over the phone to pay a fine or cancel a warrant.
