Brutal winter weather stretch continues

Authorities are asking you to limit travel. Roads were slick and snow-covered as of Monday morning, after 1.1″ of snow came down Sunday at Columbia Regional Airport, and kept falling into Monday.

Bryan Boyce with Cole County Public Works says the cold makes it tough for crews to get roads cleared.

“We use nearly double the amount of material right now when it’s as cold as it is outside. Salt…it doesn’t work as well when it’s below 20 degrees.”

We just missed a record low at Columbia Regional Airport on Sunday, bottoming out at three degrees below zero. It got even colder on Monday morning, with wind chills making it feel like negative-25 at times.

Mizzou shifted to remote-only classes and work for Monday. Columbia College and Westminster are among the others closed. Columbia Public Schools was one of the local districts already not in session because of the President’s Day holiday.

Columbia Republican Senator Caleb Rowden said Monday the Missouri Senate will not be in session at all this week, because of the weather.
