Burrell Behavioral Health made Tuesday’s announcement, saying the property that houses the 18,000 square foot building will be redeveloped into a residential facility for people undergoing treatment for behavioral health conditions. Burrell says the property will be transformed into what it calls an intensive residential treatment services center, adding it will fill a major need in mid-Missouri.

Burrell says the facility is not meant to be a permanent residence for anyone: it will have 16 bedrooms capable of accommodating clients for spans of six weeks to two years. Burrell expects the first clients to move in this spring.

939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy, who publishes Comobuz, reports the Rainbow House was Columbia’s only emergency shelter for children for 38 years before closing in September amid a state probe into its finances.
