(AP) Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot has been elected Chicago’s next mayor in a resounding victory that shows a clear call for change in the nation’s third-largest city.
The political novice defeated Cook County Board President and former Alderman Toni Preckwinkle on Tuesday.
The election was historic even before the votes were counted because it guaranteed Chicago its first black female mayor. The vote also was a repudiation of the old-style, insider politics that have long defined Chicago.
