City manager on Columbia trash system complaints

John Glascock has heard your complaints about Columbia’s new trash system. The city manager says he is doing the best he can with the system citizens voted for.

“Before, you could literally set your house at the curb and we would pick it all up for $15 a month,” Glascock said on Wake Up Columbia. “We had to fix it, because I couldn’t hire enough staff to keep doing what we were doing.”

Columbia trash customers have to put normal waste in black bags with city logos on them. They get an average of two bags a week for free, then have to pay extra for more.

Petitioners are gathering signatures now to get roll carts for trash in Columbia. The city council is banned from even considering that option right now.

The city on Friday said illegal trash dumping is on the rise since Columbia changed to its latest trash system.
