Cole County commissioners are considering an engineering study.
The new county jail has unfinished shell space where they could expand and add cells for about 200 more prisoners.
“[Federal agencies] can send their prisoners to us,” Cole County Commissioner Jeff Hoelscher says. “The federal prisoners…we get paid more than what we do from the state on their prisoners.”
Hoelscher says the possible expansion on another floor would require hiring more jailers.
