Columbia officials say pedestrian deaths and serious injuries are unacceptable and that redundancy is crucial.

The city council will hear a 23-page report at Monday afternoon’s pre-council meeting at 5 at city hall. The report says that 32 percent of Columbia’s fatal crashes between 2019 and 2023 were pedestrians and that 88 percent of pedestrian fatalities happened during dark conditions.

The report says the intersection with the largest number of pedestrian-involved crashes from 2015 to 2024 is College and University Avenues, which saw 12 of them. It’s unclear how many of those were fatalities. There were six crashes during that timeframe at College and Rollins, according to the report.

The council will not be voting on any bill relating to this topic on Monday.
