Columbia Regional Airport is only seeing about 40% of the passengers it saw at this time in 2019.
Stacey Button, the regional economic development official who oversees the airport, says the numbers are trending up though after the pandemic grounded most travel in April.
“Looking at the numbers and the trends that we’ve seen at Columbia Regional, I do think that we’re faring a little bit better than some of the communities who felt definitely much more difficult impacts.”
Officials in November celebrated the groundbreaking of Columbia Regional Airport’s new, bigger terminal. It will open in 2022.Button says the airport is the “front door” for mid-Missouri.
“It’s real important to us that this new terminal provides that welcoming environment and that the interior features and the design of the building itself really represent our region.”
Button talked more about the airport during CEO Roundtable, which airs Saturdays at 7 a.m. on 93.9 The Eagle.
