It only took a few hours for the city of Columbia to be overwhelmed by applications for a program meant to help small businesses.
The program was offering microloans up to $5,000 before the city stopped taking requests at about noon Wednesday.

Unemployment statewide was already up to 4.5% in March, before the full impact of COVID-19 on the economy hit. Retail sales had an unprecedented drop nationally last month.
