Columbia College student dies after accident

A Columbia College women’s volleyball player has died in an off-campus accident.

Police say Shelby Meyer, 21, was trying to climb to the roof of an apartment building on Hitt Street at about 2 a.m. Saturday. She fell of the ladder, and was pronounced dead from her injuries at a hospital. Police say they do not suspect foul play.

A statement from Columbia College says Meyer is from Festus, Mo. She transferred this semester from Mineral Area College.

Meyer is the second Columbia College student to die in a matter of days. Nadria Wright, 18, was shot and killed in central Columbia late Friday, Sept. 13.
