Columbia council approves budget, trash service changes

The Columbia City Council approved its next budget on Monday night.

The budget that takes effect Oct. 1 is smaller than this fiscal year, coming in just under $457 million. The city manager proposed job cuts in his budget proposal.

One of the changes comes with trash service. You will have to put residential trash in city-provided bags. Pickup of heavy items would have to be scheduled in advance, and cost extra. Solid waste workers would also get a five-dollar-an-hour-raise. The department is dealing with staffing issues. Your residential trash rate will also go up 85 cents a month.
