Columbia council begins budget talks

The Columbia City Council on Monday started looking at the budget for the next fiscal year.

It looks like revenues will be down a little, $891,666 in Fiscal Year 2020 compared to 2019. Interim city manager John Glascock says internet shopping continues to cut into sales taxes.

Council members talked about potential cuts, and potential tax increases they could put on one of your future ballots. They may also dip into reserves.

Columbia interim police chief Geoff Jones asked for more officers during Monday’s preliminary budget talks. He wants to double the beats in town from 8 to 16, so his force has more of a presence in the community. He says there are seven CPD positions to fill, but the turnover rate is slowing down in the department.
