Columbia council set to approve budget Monday

The Columbia city council is set to give final approval to the budget after Monday night’s public hearing.

The $485 million spending plan takes effect Oct. 1.

Monday night also marks the first meeting for Ian Thomas since the councilman was charged with a misdemeanor for an ethical violation. He’s admitted to offering his vote for a new development if the developer put money toward affordable housing in town. But Thomas has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charge.

The mayor and most of the other council members put out a statement saying what Thomas did was wrong. Michael Trapp did not sign the statement, but says he does not object to it.
