The resolution before council tonight includes a commitment to reduce violent crime. City manager De’Carlon Seewood’s memo says the resolution is required for Columbia Police and the city to apply to the Missouri Blue Shield program administered by the state Department of Public Safety (DPS). Cities with this designation are eligible to apply for state grants involving public safety training and equipment.

Columbia Police Chief Jill Schlude released 2024 crime statistics in March. While the number of crimes against property and society decreased from 2023 to 2024, the number of murders increased from seven in 2023 to 13 murders last year. The numbers of robberies in Columbia also increased from 44 in 2023 to 52 last year, according to the crime statistics.

Mr. Seewood recommends passage of the resolution. The council meets tonight at 7.
