(AUDIO) Pitzer, Columbia council want roll carts on November ballot

The Columbia City Council plans to put roll carts for trash on the November ballot. Members passed the idea 4-3 on Monday night.

There was some concern about overturning a vote of the people in 2016 opposing roll carts. The initiative petition putting a six-month hold on roll cart talk got a 54% “yes” vote. But roll-cart supporters like councilman Matt Pitzer say opinions on what he calls a broken system have changed since then.

“We tried to patch it up and keep the old car running as best we can, but it’s clear that it’s time to junk it.”

Columbia had to suspend curbside recycling indefinitely in early July because of what the city called a severe staff shortage. The plan is for the council to introduce the ballot measure at the Aug. 3 meeting, then approve it for November during the Aug. 17 meeting.
