Columbia councilman propose “Economic Dignity” property tax

A Columbia city councilman wants a property tax hike to help people in need.

Ian Thomas calls it an Economic Dignity and Survival proposal: a 41-cent property tax hike for needs like affordable housing and public transit.

Fellow councilman Michael Trapp says on The Gary Nolan Show he’s on board.

“We have a tax base heavily skewed toward sales tax, and I think enlarging our property tax and directing towards quality of life issues is something that I’ve long been supportive of.”

Trapp says he does not expect enough fellow council members to agree to put the tax hike idea on your ballot.

“But I think it’s important to look at how we can make some investments in things that are going to improve the quality of life, specifically affordable housing, addressing homelessness.”
