A Boone County judge has scheduled an April jury trial for a man charged with shooting and killing a man last year in a busy Columbia grocery store parking lot.

Boone County Circuit Judge Joshua Calvin Devine has scheduled a three-day jury trial for 23-year-old Loyal Martell of Holts Summit, who’s charged with first degree murder, attempted robbery and armed criminal action for the August 2022 shooting death of Shavez Waage in the Moser’s parking lot on Keene. Under Missouri law, first degree murder means prosecutors believe the killing was premeditated.

Martell’s trial is set to begin on April 17.

Court documents obtained by 939 the Eagle indicate the victim was shot to death in broad daylight while sitting in his Honda Accord outside Moser’s. It’s still unclear what the motive was. A second suspect in this case, Joshua Dudley of Kirksville, is charged with second degree murder and two other felonies. The Columbia Police Department’s probable cause statement quotes Dudley as telling detectives that Martell shot and killed Waage.
