Columbia police increasing patrols for St. Patrick’s Day weekend

Local and state law enforcement agencies will be out in full force on roads in and around Columbia and Boone County looking for impaired drivers during St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

“The effects of impaired driving can be far-reaching and, in some cases, tragic and devastating,” said Sgt. Clint Sinclair of the Columbia Police Department DWI Unit. “We always encourage safe alcohol consumption and driving decisions year-round, especially during times of celebration, including St. Patrick’s Day.”

Sinclair encourages drivers to use ride-sharing programs, public transportation, or assign a designated driver.

Anyone who is under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and/or prescription medications is illegally driving impaired.

In 2018, more than 900 people died in traffic crashes in Missouri, and one of the top contributing factors was impaired driving.
