Columbia Police are investigating an apparent suicide at the Fifth and Walnut parking garage downtown.

CPD spokesman Colin Imhoff tells 939 the Eagle that he can confirm there was a suicide that led to a death in the 500 block of East Walnut. Our news partner ABC-17 was on-scene and reports it happened at the Fifth and Walnut garage.

Downtown’s largest garage has seen at least ten suicides since it opened in 2011.

Previous reporting from 939 the Eagle shows the city of Columbia has spent at least $831,000 on suicide prevention measures since the garage opened. They’ve completed a $489,000 project to install fencing on the garage’s top level and they’ve spent $342,000 to install 150 steel window coverings on floors five through eight.
