A bill providing a $15,000 appropriation to temporarily extend tower operating hours at Columbia Regional Airport (COU) has been first-read by the city council.

The city manager’s office says Taxiway A’s reconstruction is set to begin this summer, and that aircraft will be required to back taxi in order to take off and land for 90 days. The  funding is aimed at enhancing safety for commercial aircraft during the project.

The money would cover costs for one additional air traffic controller and would extend the tower’s operating hours from July 1 through September 19.

The money would come from the airport’s retained earnings account.
