Columbia school start delayed to Sept. 8

The Columbia Public Schools board votes to delay the start of the year two weeks, until Sept. 8.

The district plans to decide on Aug. 24 whether to go to a hybrid model of learning because of coronavirus concerns. Most students would have two days of in-person classes, with the rest of the week online. The board of education also approved that as an option during Monday night’s meeting.

Supt. Peter Stiepleman said Monday that CPS will look during the year at new coronavirus cases in the district over the previous two weeks when deciding whether to learn fully in-person, to go hybrid, or to teach online only.

Families who already chose to have students learn online-only in the fall will not be affected by the calendar change. CPS is giving families the chance to choose again between in-person and online learning like they did in June. Some students with special needs will be able to learn in-person for five days a week.

CPS and the rest of Boone County’s public schools are receiving internet hot spots to give families with online learners. The money is coming from the federal CARES Act. The money is coming from the federal CARES Act. Columbia is getting 700 of the hot spots, worth more than $300,000.
