Columbia shooting suspect was out on bond awaiting trial for Jefferson City kidnapping case

A man currently out on bond for kidnapping and assault charges in Cole County is now charged with Saturday night’s shooting of a man at a Columbia park.

Boone County prosecutors have charged 23-year-old Terron Shelton with first degree assault and armed criminal action. Shelton hasn’t been arrested yet. He’ll be jailed without bond when he’s captured.

A motion from the Boone County assistant prosecutor Melissa Knerr says Shelton used an “AK-47 style firearm” to shoot the victim in the back of his right tricep at Cosmo park. The alleged kidnapping charge is from Jefferson City. While Shelton was jailed without bond in February, online court records show he was approved in March for a pre-trial release program.

Our news partner KMIZ reports Saturday night’s shooting happened during a large gathering near the Cosmo park soccer fields. The victim’s vehicle also had several bullet holes in it, according to ABC-17 videographers.
