Citing increasing safety concerns and the importance of providing a safe and secure working environment, Columbia’s top staff is recommending the city council approve a security upgrade at city hall downtown.

The bill will be first-read at tonight’s (Monday) Columbia city council meeting.

The proposed $75,000 security upgrade would include enclosing the first floor information reception desk area with a door that can lock from the inside, a ballistic glass barrier with an amplified sound speaker and an exit door.

City manager De’Carlon Seewood recommends approval, citing an increase in safety concerns for those reception desk employees in the past few months.

  1. And why just the reception area? Why not the entire ground accessible wiindows all around the building? This would sound like the rest of the employees in the building aren’t worth as much as the reception area people. People could shoot or break through any ground floor window. With security either do it right or don’t even bother. It will be like locking the front door to the house but everything else wide open. Think like a crazy criminal when doing these upgrades instead of somebody just wanting to make a show of it.
