Columbia’s city council considering use tax ballot measure

Columbia officials say vendors located outside city limits and internet-based vendors have a competitive advantage over Columbia vendors because they don’t have to charge the local sales tax.

Staff has prepared an ordinance to place a local use tax on the April ballot, and that will be first-read at tonight’s (Monday) city council meeting. The council is expected to vote on the issue in January.

If voters approve the proposed April ballot measure, the local use tax would be enacted on purchases from vendors located outside city limits.

Staff estimates a use tax would produce revenue equivalent of nine percent of sales tax revenue.
