A bill to lift Columbia’s ban on roll carts for solid waste and recycling will be first read by the city council tonight (Monday).

Fifth ward city councilman Matt Pitzer is the bill sponsor. If the council approves the bill at the May 16 meeting, the August roll cart election would no longer be required.

The city council voted unanimously in April to place the roll cart issue on the August citywide ballot. They had to take action in April on the successful initiative to repeal the city’s prohibition on the use of residential roll carts.
