Columbia’s city council will hold a special meeting this evening to appoint a Second Ward council member.

The seat has been vacant since the day before Thanksgiving, when Councilwoman Andrea Waner resigned because she’s moving to a new home outside her ward.

Eight applicants want to fill the remaining four months of Waner’s term. City officials say all eight applicants are residents and are qualified voters of the second ward, as required by the city charter. The eight applicants are Susan Renee Carter, Rachel Proffitt, Lisa Evelyn Anne Meyer, William Moyes, Cornelia Williams, Frederick Saffold, Robert Schreiber III and Lucio Bitoy IV.

The council’s agenda indicates the council will appoint a second ward council member tonight and will also appoint a new mayor pro tem. Waner had been serving as mayor pro tem. Ms. Waner announced this year that she wouldn’t be seeking re-election in 2024, to focus on her health after being diagnosed with eye cancer.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 5 at city hall.
