Columbia’s city manager describes the city’s new Office of Violence Prevention administrator position as a groundbreaking step in efforts to reduce community violence.

D’Markus Thomas-Brown begins his new job Monday morning. City manager De’Carlon Seewood says Thomas-Brown’s understanding of the challenges Columbia faces along with his ability to engage with residents and community partners will help shape a safer and stronger future for Columbia.
Mr. Seewood proposed the creation of the new position during his May 2024 state of the city address. Mr. Seewood has also told 939 the Eagle that stopping Columbia’s violence must also include providing support and tools that law enforcement needs to be successful. Mayor Barbara Buffalo first proposed creation of the new office in October 2023, after the killing of a three-year-old child.
Mr. Thomas-Brown says his position can be instrumental in developing systemic change by empowering individuals and families. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Columbia College. He’s worked as the regional director of Good Dads Inc. since 2024. 939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy, who publishes Comobuz, reports Thomas-Brown’s starting salary will be $95,000 annually.
