Council approves design-build plan at Columbia Regional Airport

The Columbia City Council on Monday night agreed to move ahead with a design-build process on a new airport terminal.

Dave Hadel with Burns and McDonnell, the city’s engineering consultant, says the winning bidder will have to do well on its qualifications and its price.

“Points are awarded for each of those categories. The total points then creates the perceived winner of the design-build competition.”

Physical work on phase 1 of the project is on track to start next summer. Travelers could start using the new terminal in 2022. It’s expected to be about 60,000 square feet, located just south of the existing terminal and east of Airport Drive. The current terminal is 16,000 square feet.

This phase is expected to cost about $20 million. Future phases could cost an additional $15 million. Funding has come from several different sources.
