The Columbia City Council votes Monday night on authorizing construction of the Flat Branch Park expansion downtown.
It includes a new Gateway Plaza on the southeast corner of Broadway and Providence. That’s near where a CVS Pharmacy was rejected several times.
The plan was for private cash to cover the cost of the $1.9 million project, but fundraising lagged during the pandemic. Staffers now recommend pulling $200,000 from the city parks sales tax, and $300,000 from the general fund.
The goal is to have the park done in time for the city’s bicentennial celebration over Fourth of July weekend.
