Columbia Police investigators have announced that criminal charges will not be filed at this time in Sunday afternoon’s deadly shooting at the McDonald’s parking lot on Nifong.
CPD says they’ve reviewed the case with Boone County prosecutors, adding that all known parties who were directly involved have been interviewed. Columbia Police say the incident started with the two drivers “encountering each other” in traffic on Grindstone Parkway and that one driver followed the other into the McDonald’s parking lot. CPD says there was a confrontation and that both drivers fired shots. CPD has identified the motorist who was shot and killed Sunday as 32-year-old Derek Gonzalez. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
CPD describes its investigation as ongoing and encourages anyone with information to call Columbia Crimestoppers at (573) 875-TIPS. 939 the Eagle’s LG Patterson was on-scene shortly after the incident, and reports CPD, Boone County Sheriff’s deputies and Missouri state troopers responded to the scene.
