CPS begins 2019-20 school year budget process

Budget season is underway for the Columbia Public Schools district.

Wednesday night, members of the district’s Finance Committee learned that projecting revenue for next year amounts to more guesswork than anything.

Chief Financial Officer Heather McArthur presented an overview of what the district is likely to receive in revenue, which included property tax and state funding.

Thanks to unknowns from lawmaker appropriations to the state’s foundation formula and transportation, much of it is up in the air.

The finance committee made conservative projection recommendations that the board of education will consider on Monday.

Board member Jonathan Sessions likened picking one of the 2019-20 school year revenue projections from the state to throwing darts at a dartboard.
