While storms, damaging winds and frequent rain have had an impact, construction crews are making progress on the new multi-million dollar Trader Joe’s being built in Columbia.

Crews are working on both levels as they completely renovate the former Macy’s at the Shoppes at Stadium. Crews have the construction site fenced off, and there are cones around the area as well.

The popular grocery store chain’s November announcement that they’re coming to Columbia was greeted locally with major excitement, although some customers worry about parking and traffic in that area. The Shoppes at Stadium have places like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Men’s Warehouse and the Chick-fil-A is always crowded, especially the drive-through.

Trader Joe’s is best known for its wide selection of food and its produce and dairy items. The company was founded in 1967 in Pasadena, California. Trader Joe’s is expected to open later this year. Columbia and Jefferson City residents currently have to travel to the St. Louis suburbs of Chesterfield or Brentwood to shop at Trader Joe’s.

The company website says Trader Joe’s is “committed to providing our customers outstanding value in the form of the best quality products at the best everyday prices.
