A Columbia man charged with murder for a 2017 drug-related killing in the Old Hawthorne subdivision will appear in court Friday afternoon.

29-year-old Jeffrey McWilliams is charged with second degree murder, robbery and armed criminal action, for the December 2017 death of Augustus Roberts. Mr. Roberts died at a home in the 1900 block of Lasso Circle. McWilliams pleaded not guilty in February in Boone County Circuit Court.

McWilliams’ lawyer has filed a motion to try to stop a warrant for his client’s DNA. McWilliams’ jury trial is set to begin on April 19.

The Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible” featured McWilliams on its show in 2019, when McWilliams worked at the now-closed McLanks in Columbia. McWilliams also worked at an ice cream store in east Columbia.

Our news partner ABC-17 reported in 2019 that a DEA investigation alleged that Roberts’ homicide was tied to a drug trafficking scheme.
