Election results: Columbia, Fulton school bond issues pass easily

Columbia and Fulton voters gave a big thumbs up to no-tax increase public school bond issues during Tuesday’s municipal election.

The $20 million Columbia bond got 86% support. Unofficial results say 72% of voters said yes to the $27.5 million Fulton bond.

A couple newcomers, Chris Horn and David Seamon, and incumbent president Helen Wade won the contested Columbia school board seats. Incumbent Jonathan Sessions is out.

Pat Fowler will replace Clyde Ruffin on the Columbia City Council, after she won a three-way race in Ward 1 over Mark Anderson and Greg Pierson. Ruffin did not seek re-election. Incumbent Ward 5 councilman Matt Pitzer ran unopposed. Mike Lester won the contested Jefferson City Council seat, Aaron Mealy and Gregory Butler.

Richard Sullivan is Ashland’s mayor-elect. Gene Rhorer did not seek re-election.

Callaway County voters agreed to a six-cent property tax hike to help the library, with 58% in favor.

The municipal vote was delayed from April because of coronavirus concerns. Turnout was low. Boone County reported 12% voter turnout, compared to nearly 20% in April 2019.
