Thousands of visitors are in Columbia today (Friday), tomorrow and Sunday for the final weekend of the 38th annual Show-Me State Games.

Mayor Barbara Buffaloe tells 939 the Eagle that she’s expecting a total of about 40,000 visitors between this and last weekend. That includes athletes and spectators.

“So we know how important it is to support and be an overwhelmingly welcoming environment for having these families coming to visit Columbia,” Mayor Buffaloe says.

She estimates the games are generating a $7-million to $18-million economic impact in Columbia, between last and this weekend.

Columbia’s Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) says there are few hotel rooms left this weekend, due to thousands of visitors traveling here for the Show-Me State Games. CVB spokeswoman Megan McConachie encourages anyone looking for a hotel room to call (573) 874-CITY.

Mayor Buffaloe tells 939 the Eagle that Show-Me State game visitors bring economic and cultural benefits.

“So I encourage every Columbia resident and visitor to really like put on that smile, welcome people to come here. Maybe be a little bit more patient at our stop lights, you know if there’s a little more traffic. Because that means that those people are having a good experience here in Columbia. And we want them to keep coming back and to think fondly of us when they hear about the words Columbia, Missouri,” says Buffaloe.
