First of two Democratic debates held in Detroit

(AP) – The Democratic Party’s tug-of-war over pragmatism versus ideological purity was on display in Tuesday night’s debate in Detroit.

Attacks on the leading liberal health care policy, “Medicare for All,” dominated much of the debate with the leading progressive candidates, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, defending it and more moderate candidates warning about costs and effectiveness.

The issue of race unified the 10 candidates in their condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recent remarks.
