Flooding Mississippi River tests communities as it surges

(AP) – Flooding along the Mississippi River is closing roads, inundating low lying areas and testing sandbag fortifications.

The river was cresting Tuesday in St. Louis, which closed its floodwalls in anticipation of the surge. Some parkland is underwater, although the flooding isn’t classified as major.

Upstream, river levels are beginning to fall in Clarksville, where residents sandbagged around homes and businesses. In nearby Louisiana, Missouri, the flood briefly forced closure of the Champ Clark Bridge that connects Missouri and Illinois.

So far, Mississippi River flood damage is far less severe than the March flooding along the Missouri River that busted levees in Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri. The flooding damaged hundreds of homes and swamped farmland.

About 140 Missouri roads are now closed, many in the northwest part of the state.
